The Ducal Palace of Modena, located in the scenic Piazza Roma, is one of the most refined examples of Baroque architecture in Italy. Built starting from 1634 according to a design by the architect Bartolomeo Avanzini, the palace was the residence of the d'Este family until 1859 when the duchy was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Its majestic facade, enriched with three rows of windows and decorated with statues, announces the elegance of the interiors. Upon crossing the threshold, you enter the Courtyard of Honor, one of the most fascinating examples of Baroque architecture, with a two-story loggia that brings harmony and grandeur to the space. The Staircase of Honor, embellished with Roman statues, leads to the sumptuous rooms of the Este court, including the magnificent Hall of Honor, the refined Golden Sitting Room, and the spectacular Stringa Hall, frescoed with extraordinary decorations.
Today, the Ducal Palace is home to the Military Academy of Modena, one of Italy's most prestigious institutions. It can be visited on weekends with guided tours that offer a fascinating journey through the history and art of the Este Duchy.
