Vignola Castle

The Vignola Castle, located on the banks of the Panaro River in the municipality of Vignola, Emilia-Romagna, is an imposing medieval fortress that represents a significant symbol of the local cultural identity. ​ 

History and Architecture

The origins of the Castle date back to the period following the Carolingian era when it was built to defend the village from Hungarian raids. A document from 936 attests that Vignola was under the authority of the Bishop of Modena, while another document from 1178 proves the existence of the Castle at least from that year. ​ 

In 1401, the nobleman from Ferrara, Uguccione dei Contrari, received the fiefdom of Vignola from Niccolò III d'Este as a gift. Under his guidance, the Castle transformed from a military structure into a sumptuous noble residence, enriched with decorations and frescoes. In 1577, with the extinction of the Contrari dynasty, the marquisate of Vignola passed to the Boncompagni-Ludovisi, who held the Castle until the arrival of Napoleon in 1796.   

Structure and Main Halls

The Castle is divided into five floors 

Underground: Houses the rooms of the Contrari and Grassoni, used for conferences and concerts. visitvignola.it

Ground Floor: Includes the reception rooms, including the Hall of Lions and Leopards, the Hall of Doves, and the Hall of Rings. ​

First Floor: Houses the noble rooms of the Ladies, the Pavilion, the Coats of Arms, the Tree Trunks, Uguccione's Study, and the Chapel, frescoed with late Gothic pictorial cycles attributed to the "Master of Vignola". ​

Second Floor: Here are the Halls of the Armigers, once destined for the troops and service personnel. ​ 

Battlement Walkways: The top floor is occupied by walkways that connect the three main towers: Nonantola, Women's Tower, and Paintbrush Tower
