Castle of the Guidi Counts
Majestic medieval fortress in Poppi
The Castle of the Guidi Counts, an undisputed symbol of Casentino, is a majestic medieval fortress that overlooks the village of Poppi. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, its architecture is believed to have inspired the design of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, thanks to the work of the famous architects of the Di Cambio family. Inside, visitors can admire the great hall, the precious Rilliana Library, which houses thousands of ancient manuscripts, and the chapel decorated with a cycle of 14th-century frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi. Climbing the bell tower, one can enjoy a breathtaking view that spans the entire valley and the surrounding mountains. This castle is not only a historic monument, but a true treasure trove of art and legends, including the famous battle of Campaldino.
