A LITTLE HISTORY

From the Orsini family to the present day, a history of conquests

The ancient Fortress constitutes the remains of the Castle built in the 13th century by the Pope, to oversee the territories around the lake, which at the time belonged to the patrimony of the Apostolic Chamber. In the Renaissance period, Trevignano became part of the possessions of the Orsini family, a powerful Roman family that between the 15th and 16th centuries became the owners of the lands around Lake Bracciano. At the end of the 15th century, the entire territory of the lake was involved in a harsh battle initiated by Pope Alexander VI Borgia against the Orsini family. The Pope sent his troops to invade the Orsini territories, conquering and destroying everything they trod on. On this occasion, the Castle was partially destroyed and made uninhabitable, losing its military and residential function. From that moment, the castle began to be called the Fortress of Trevignano, only a central tower remained standing until the early 1920s, being destroyed later during World War II.
